Theme: Starting a Blog

April 28, 2007

So, you read the list of sites that I provided a few posts back and you decided that the blog was the one that you wanted to do. Congratulations! I love blogs…That’s why I have this one right here. I love creating the blog and writing on it. Anyways. Congratulations on that pick. You have an idea you can work with, which is very important. You have decided on a specific niche (although this is not overly important). So, now it is time to really get things going and get this blog started. I am sure you are as excited as I was when I was starting this blog and that is good! Excitement is a great motivator to work for your blog…It can really help make or break a blog. But, it is just one of the things you can do to make or break a blog.

The first thing that you need to do is go get a domain and hosting. If you want some tips on some good places for a domain and hosting, just read my article getting a domain name and hosting. That will tell you where I recommend getting domain names and hosting and might just get you what you need to get started on your journey to creating an awesome blog. So, let’s skip ahead and say you have purchased your hosting and domain name and it is now time to get started. On the control panel for this particular hosting company, it has something titled fantastico. By going to that, you can set up any number of programs. A blog is one of them. With a simple click of a button, you can have a blog set up. Voila, you have a blog.

The next step is finding a theme. A theme is what the blog looks like. To find the perfect theme for you, go to the wordpress theme site. I recommend browsing around for a while because there are tons of different themes there. Sometimes, there are some that are hidden that might be PERFECT for your blog, so really look around and don’t just pick the first one you like. You never know, you may like another one even better. You just never know. Anyways. Once you have picked your theme and uploaded it to your blog, it is time for the fun part.

Content…Content…Content. I will tell you now just how important content is to the growth of your blog. Without content, it will die. I will tell you that right now. Without the help of content, your blog is useless. That is why you must stay consistent with what you do. If you want to post three times a day, make sure that you post three times a day. There is nothing worse than someone not posting when they have begun to create a rhythm. I highly recommend once or twice a day, but if you cannot do that, at least try for a few times a week. But, from my experience, someone that does not have the time to try and update at least a couple of times a week doesn’t really have the motivation to get somewhere.

Now your blog is growing. You are writing content every day and you are seeing some growth. In a future post, I will talk about different things you might want to try out to try and increase the profits by which you can make. Furthermore, I will discuss different methods to increase the traffic to your blog. For now, while you are starting your blog, stick to content. Try your best to build a following. Write interesting content and make it so people love what they are reading. The only way to get a reader to come back is if you give them something to come back. Good content is that something. Good luck!

Theme: Finding Your Niche

April 27, 2007

If you go around different webmaster forums, you are going to hear the term “niche” quite a bit. This is because it is a very important word. Finding your niche means that you are finding your topic. You are finding the type of site(s) you want to make. Now, since this site is called Dorm Earning, I am going to relate this to college students in particular, but anyone, no matter your age, can take the same advice. Anyways. Say you are a history major. And say, in particular, you are interested in ancient wars. You could make a bunch of websites or one website all about ancient wars.

What do I mean? Say you are interested in the Roman Empire in specific. You could write a site about the Roman Empire’s wars. Now, you’d write an article about the Punic Wars, the Gallic Wars, the attempted conquest of Germania (but the failure if you remember the Battle of Teutoburg Forest) and all of this. You could mention even the different Emperors and then even mention the different weaponry and the such. Well, there’s one site. Now, you could do the same thing for the Greeks. And the Mongols. And the Chinese. And suddenly you have a series of websites all about different topics of history.

What does this mean? This means that you just found your niche. You created a series of historically related websites and that is your niche or your specialty. It can take some time to find your niche, but you will find it when you find something that you really enjoy writing about. If you like science, make science sites. If you like art, make art sites. If you like music, make music sites. The point is very simple…No matter what you like, you can make that your niche. Specialize in something you like and you might just begin to create a series of websites that are all interconnected. And the best part, if you link between them, you might even make a bit more money.
