Earning Money

In my post about typing papers for money, I talked about how you could take your skill of typing and turn it into a business where you type (not write) papers for people because they can’t do it. And Rose mentioned in her post about using your talents that if you can do something good, do it. Well, the same goes if you are smart. Who says that smart people can’t make money? Did you know that Bill Gates was teased all the time as a teenager because he was so smart? Now look at him…I hate to say it, but I’d take being teased every day for that many billions of dollars. That’s a lot of money. But…Being a tutor can also make you money!

There are two ways that you can do this. The first is through the school. Often times, the school will hire students, pay them hourly, to tutor students for free. At least, that’s how my school is. You contact the Dean or something and express your interest and then if you are qualified, you are given the job. The student gets tutored for free and you get a check every two weeks that is the money that you earned from tutoring. It’s a nice deal, but you have little control over how much money you make and it is all based on a “I have to work an hourly basis to actually make money.”

The other way that you can make money from tutoring is that you control it. This works best in bigger universities. Post a bulletin in the different buildings of your campus and basically tell them that you’ll tutor them. It can be one on one if you want, but an evil way (not really) to make more money is to actually do group tutoring. Say five people need biology help. You say that you’re all meeting at the same time, charge each one ten bucks, and then tutor them all for that hour. Well, you made fifty dollars for helping five people in ONE room. That’s consolidating your time as well as making fifty dollars for an hour of work. Pretty nice, huh?

Now, being a tutor can be difficult if you don’t know your topic really well, but people usually know at least ONE topic in college. If you can specialize in that topic and offer exceptional tutoring in it, you’re bound to make money. You need to establish a network of clients, of course, but if you can set up those group tutoring dates, it’ll make earning money a hell of a lot easier and it’ll make having time for your own studies a hell of a lot easier. And since you’re going to college to learn yourself, you don’t want to spend all your time ensuring others are doing good. Try it out next semester and see if you have any success.

Okay yes, I realize that’s an odd name for the article but allow me to elaborate. It’s hard to go out and have a good time with your friends any more without spending a lot of money. When you’re in college $20 here and $20 there really adds up. I propose that you can have a great night with no more than $5.

Here is how it works. You and all your friends agree that no one is going to spend more than $5 for the night. If you have a group of five people that means you have $25 to work with. Have one person rent a new release from Blockbuster, someone else to buy chips and another to buy drinks. You can use the rest of the money to play dime poker or rent video games no one has tried. The trick is having everyone pool their money together.

Remember to keep an eye out for coupons in your email box and local paper. A lot of chain pizza restaurants have deals where you can get 3 pizzas for just $15. That would feed plenty of people. If you’re all desperate to get out, consider going to a matinée showing of a new movie versus the later show. You can save $2-3 that way.

Maybe you’re looking for something a little more active. Use your five dollars for a sack lunch and bottled water and hit the hiking trails with your friends. If you’re into group activities, consider cooking dinner together using a unique or strange recipe from the web.
