Theme: A Hard Lesson Learned About Web Hosts

November 28, 2007

I have a story to tell, so pull a chair, sit back, relax, have some popcorn, because the story I am going to tell could be a story you have experienced before. Oh, I know! You’ve heard all about overselling. You have heard about how web hosts, at least some of them, can’t be trusted and they are never to be relied on. Spend more money, get a better host, get a dedicated, whatever. You’ve heard it all before. But, amuse me and allow me to tell you this story…It is a good story. It is a lesson that I hope you can learn from this blog post rather than reality yourself. Let me begin…

Once upon a time, in a far away land called my friend in Ohio, there lived my friend. And he came across an amazing deal for a proxy that was making a killing in money. He made the wrong move and forgot to ask how much hosting was costing the man before he bought it. So, he bought the site and he decided he was going to build a network of proxies. If one works, so will so many others. And so he began. However, before he could even get started, his web host said, “no! Your proxy is sucking too much bandwidth, we hate you, GO!” So he went.

Now…He went in search of a web host. He went searching long and hard, praying he could find a web host that would satisfy him. And along came the knight in shining armor, the knight who said, “you can have UNLIMITED disk space and UNLIMITED bandwidth for $15.99.” My friend said, “awesome, let me try it!” And he took it. He took the web host and he put his proxies up and he began to have some beneficial days. And then…Tragedy hit. That knight in shining armor was no knight! He was a deceiver!

My friend found out that his hosting had been cut off because he was using too much bandwidth. Wait, I thought that he got unlimited EVERYTHING for $15.99. And so, on he went, looking for a new web host to try and turn his not so great network into a shining, earning, profitable network. And although he has yet to live happily ever after, we will say that he did, just for the sake of the story…The End.

What did you learn from this story? I learned never to trust a guy that says, “yeah! Unlimited everything for less than a dollar a day! SCORE!” No. That’s bogus. He lost more profitability because of the downtime. As webmasters, we CANNOT afford that. Learn from the lesson of my friend…Get a reliable host. Spend some money. Do whatever it takes to ensure that you are giving your sites the best uptime possible. Their uptime will determine whether you have success or not. So, learn from the story of the big bad overseller. Copies will be available in all bookstores before Christmas. Later!

Theme: Over Two Hundred Posts

November 26, 2007

When I first bought the domain name, DormEarning.com, I had intended on creating a static content site, putting up as many ideas as I could think up in a few days and then flip the site.  I had all the intentions of making a few hundred bucks and then calling it a day.  Not sure what happened, but instead, I created a blog and it became one of my favorite blogs.  I own other ones, but this is one that I can say that I have written most on and if you look, it’s really true.  I have written over two hundred posts since starting and I have received over two hundred comments.  The comments are not much, but each one, to me, is amazing!

So, I was thinking to myself what I could do to give back to my readers and I was really trying to think and the truth is, I am still thinking.  But, what I did want to do is ask you what you would like to see.  I know that I write about blogging and saving money and how to promote your blog and all of these things, but what do you want to see?  I have talked to some readers and I have some plans to write about things they have requested, but if you have never e-mailed me (and you are welcome to, I’m always looking to make new contacts), then maybe you would like to see something.

I write about what I know, but I am a firm believer that you should always look to broaden your horizons and learn MORE.  That is why I am asking.  Leave a comment, let me know what you want to see on the blog.  And if I can, I will try and implement it.  So, here is to another two hundred posts and another two hundred after that.  Since April, I have been writing and I can’t wait for the one year mark.  Maybe I’ll have a surprise for my readers, who knows?  So, thanks for a fun two hundred posts and let’s keep making the money!
