Theme: Building Your StumbleUpon Account to Be Worth More

December 23, 2007

When I say ‘to be worth more,’ I don’t mean monetary gain, but I mean the strength at which a vote from you is worth something. What do I mean by this? If you’re not sure what Stumble is, here is a quick link to describe what it is. To explain it in a real quick nutshell, StumbleUpon is another way to get people to your site. It’s run on a voting system and the more people that click the “I Like It” thumb up button on one of your articles, the more traffic you can get when someone clicks on the “Stumble” button to be taken to a random site. That’s how it works, in a sense. Random sites appear on the site based on preferences that the people have whenever someone clicks on the stumble button. But…The hard thing is getting your stuff to appear before the different stumblers. You need to have an account worth more to do that.

Since StumbleUpon is a voting system, what you are relying on is getting people to stumble your stuff. But, you can’t be greedy about it. In a sense, those that give get the most in the end. So, if you went around and stumbled tons of different pages, theoretically, you would be worth more and more. But, rather than doing that, let me try and give you a few pieces of advice on how you might be able to make your account worth. Now, I am still working on this for my own account, but after seeing the effects of ONE stumble on one of my articles, I have to say, I am very excited to get a strong account. Anyways…Here a few tips to getting your account worth more:

  • Give the “I Like It” to numerous different people. Now, I don’t recommend doing it time and time and time again, over and over because in a sense, that’s cheating the system. Will they know? I don’t know. But, what they’re hoping is to put good content forward. So, if what you’re reading sucks, don’t vote yes for it. But don’t vote no. Just don’t vote. By not voting, they gain nothing and lose nothing. But, if you find something good, take that extra second and say “I Like It.” That will give you a bit more strength.
  • Make friends on StumbleUpon. I don’t do it enough myself, but I have noticed that there are some really big accounts out there with tons and tons of friends. There’s no denying that by having a strong friendship base, you are, in a sense, showing you are more active and that will give you stronger support when you’re voting for a story. Take some time, make some friends, and it’ll help you in the end.
  • Leave reviews if you can. People love to read reviews and not only are they going to read it, they might come and check out what you have. And, they might, out of the graciousness of their heart, give you a stumble right back. Bam, there you go, you’ve got yourself another vote. And, make the review mean something. Don’t just put “cool.” Say what is cool about it. Really put some thought into it and it’ll help you in the end.

Now, no one really understands the algorithm of StumbleUpon. What they know is that the more active you are, the better your account is worth. Now, why is this great? Because, as your account is worth more, people will notice you more and then come check out your stuff. It’s okay to submit your own content, but having someone else submit it is TEN TIMES better. So, the stronger your account is, the more submissions that other people will do with your content and then if you vote on it as well, bam, there you go, you’ve just gained a considerable amount of traffic. Take a little while everyday to build up your account. You’ll find that as time goes on, your account will become better and better and you’ll get more traffic. Try it out and let me know how it goes.
