Theme: Can a Blog Survive on Guest Posts Alone
February 4, 2008I was looking at John Cow’s blog and I noticed that they had gone away for a while to recharge their brains and basically made the site open to ANYONE to post a blog post. All that was required was John to come in and ensure that they wanted that exact blog post to be on their site. But, in a sense, what they were doing was saying that “if you think that you can write a good post about our topic, you can write.” I even tried it and hopefully my article will pop up.
But, what this brings up is the question of whether or not you can really run a blog for any length of time on guest posts alone. And my answer is that I think it really depends on what type of blog you are running, but more so than that, it depends entirely on how big your blog is. If you run a blog that is really big like John Cow or John Chow, if you were to go away for any period of time, people would want some of that traffic so bad, they would be willing to write a post. But, how long can it last?
I go to John Cow and John Chow to read what they have to say. I don’t go there to constantly read guest blog posts. I don’t go there to read from average people (and yes, I am average). So, what does that mean? It means that, at first, it may work out for you, but as time goes on, you are going to be losing people from coming to the blog. They want to read your content because you are a leader in the field. If you are constantly making other people write content for you, after a while, the readers will get fed up.
So, can a blog survive on guest posts alone? Yes, it can, but after a while, people are going to start getting fed up with the fact that there is nothing from the reader that they had intended on learning from. Having guest posts is a great thing and it can bring tremendous traffic to your site as well as bring more readers to the blog that is being written on; however, after time goes on, a guest blog post will be a guest blog post and it will slowly deteriorate your value. But that’s my opinion. Others are entitled to their own opinions and I am sure you have yours. I think guest posts are good, but too many is never good.
