Theme: Creating a Mini-Site (Part 2)

May 21, 2007

This blog post is part of three part series that will provide, in detail, the methods of making a content mini-site, promoting this mini-site, and profiting from this mini-site.

Now that the site is created, the content is written, and the site is up on the internet, you need to now promote it. Without some form of promotion, you won’t be able to get your site known to people. Now, there are different types of promotion. If you want to get a lot of traffic, you can do your best to get known on digg. If you want to try and get natural, general traffic, you can always do SEO. And finally, there’s always trying to submit to directories. These are just three ideas that I have to help you promote your site. There are a plethora of ways to get your site known. You just need to experiment with things. Someone once walked around with his website on his forehead. It worked too.

As I stated in my post about digg, what you want to try and do is get enough diggs so that you can hit the front page. If you can hit the front page for your site, you’re definitely going to get a lot of traffic to your site. Now, a lot of people don’t try and get their mini-sites dugg because there’s no point. Once a site is made, a person tends to forget it. However, if you can get it dugg, you might see a quick burst of profits right from the start. Naturally, this burst of traffic and profits would definitely be a nice thing. However, it’s not really natural traffic. What you want is natural traffic.

That’s where search engine optimization comes in. What you are trying to do is get your site listen in the search engines for good terms. Say you were making that neurology site that I mentioned in the last post and it’s about the anatomy of the brain, if you were able to get the keywords ‘brain anatomy’ high for your site and on the first page, you’d see a load of traffic and potentially profit to your site. Trying to rank high is the goal of all people that use search engine optimization. Methods to do that is to get links to your site or to try and post unique content. By doing this, you might very well see yourself get high rankings. Now, I am not a search engine optimizer. The key for that is to constantly learn.

The final thing to do to HELP with that search engine optimization as well as get your site well known is to submit to directories. A directory is just a list of websites. An example of a directory would be this. It just lists numerous different sites. What this does is provide you back links as well as potential traffic. I highly recommend anyone that is making a new content site to submit to at least twenty five directories their first day or two. By doing this, you’re getting a nice amount of links and you’re giving yourself the possibility to get some traffic. If you want to submit to more, go ahead. Just make sure the links are in the right categories.

These are just three ways to try and get more exposure for your site. You want exposure. You want your site to get known. But, don’t spend a lot of time trying to get your site known, especially for a mini-site. My theory on mini-sites is that they should be used for more profit, but that they should not be your main site. For example, my main site is this one and my personal blog. However, the mini-sites that I own would just be small things to own. Small profit. If you have a main site, devote most of your time to that to try and get it bigger. But, creating small mini-sites and getting them well known is not a bad idea. Stay tune because tomorrow I intend on posting an article about how you can monetize this mini-site now that you are getting exposure.

Theme: Creating a Mini-Site (Part 1)

May 20, 2007

This blog post is part of three part series that will provide, in detail, the methods of making a content mini-site, promoting this mini-site, and profiting from this mini-site.

The important thing to know when creating a mini-site is what type of site you want to make. Since a mini-site is so small, the topic needs to be very specific. It isn’t like a larger content site where you can have loads of different topics on it. Take, for example, a site about neurology. If it was a big resource site, you could put information about all different aspects of neurology. But, if you wanted to limit it to a particular topic, such as epilepsy, you wouldn’t need a massive site. That’s where a mini-site comes into a play. Simply put, it’s a site that has a few articles on it. That’s what differentiates a mini-site from a big resource site.

Once you have determined your topic, you’re going to want to create the site. To do this, understanding HTML is pretty important. Creating your own template isn’t that difficult once you have learned Dreamweaver. This is a program that helps you create websites without having to know how to write HTML by hand. It is definitely one tool that any webmaster should learn to use. On top of this, you’ll want to learn how to use Photoshop for image editing and then Illustrator when trying to get to add text to the header. This’ll give you a crisp look on your mini-site which, personally, I am big on. Although the sites are mini-sites does not mean that they should not be created with care.

Once you’ve created your site, you’re going to want to create the articles for the mini-site. The biggest thing that must be remembered when writing articles is that they need to actually be written. Don’t just take articles from article databases and the such to quickly make the sites. Write them. Original content is better because it is raw content. Search engines do like original content and so do people if you ever decide you want to sell the site. Make sure that the articles are original, have good grammar, and lastly, provide the necessary information for the reader.

Once the site has been created, you need to figure out what sort of domain name and hosting you want to get. One thing that I have seen people do is get a domain name that ends with the .info ending. It’s cheap and inexpensive and people like that. Personally, though, I like to stick with the .com ending because it is the original one. You also need to figure out hosting. If you intend on making numerous content sites, you may want to try hostgator because they allow you to have as many domain names as you want on their baby plan. Just type in “hgc25″ in the coupon section and you can get your first month for a penny.

This first part of creating a content site is definitely one of the hardest methods because of the time it takes to write the articles and to create the site using those different tools mentioned above. However, once it is made, technically, it can continue to earn for you for as long as you run ads on it. In my next post, I will go into detail about ways you can further expand your site by promoting it in numerous ways. Good luck with your mini-sites.
