Theme: College Tips: Two

July 28, 2007

In my last college tips post, I talked about how it is important not to let the great parties at college get in the way of your schooling. And this is still very true; however, that’s not what I am going to talk about today. Today’s tip is: Getting to know your professors. You’d never think that getting to know those mean, old people to whom you are stuck listening to every single day would actually be of importance. They’re just the bastards that give you those impossible tests and make you stay up late at night studying because you’re so afraid of failing. Well, let me clue you in one something…

They’re humans like we are too and if you talk to them, they can form friendships just like a student could with another student. Now, you may be thinking that what I am saying is that you should make friends with your professors so that you can get easier grades. What I am talking about is making friends with them so that when the time comes that you want to get a recommendation for graduate school, you can actually get it. I go to a small school, so it is easy to get known. It is also easy to really mess up. That’s why I ensure that I am always asking how my professor is and all of that. Just a little conversation can go a long way.

Now, how can this help with your online ventures? Get to know the people that are a bit bigger than you. If you are going to get into blogging, then think about trying to get in contact with the big bloggers and perhaps form a friendship with them. They’re not mean and so long as you’re not trying to steal their ideas or just get advice 24/7, a lot of them are rather nice. But, the benefit to doing this is that down the line, if you write a really cool blog post and then send it to them to get their opinion, they may be inclined to post on their site about it and that’ll give you a boost of traffic.

I have said numerous times that making relationships is very important for your growth on and off the web. There is no denying that it is very important because it gives you the chance to branch out and befriend other people and gain more contacts. Befriending a professor could definitely aid you in your chances of getting a real good letter of recommendation and befriending a top blogger could definitely aid you in your chances of being included in one of their posts that could, in the end, send some nice amounts of traffic to your post. Make friends with those with more power and in the end, it’ll help you win.
