Theme: Don’t Start With Too Many Forums

July 17, 2007

There is one thing that I learned when I started to create forums. If you have way too many forums right from the start, it is going to be very difficult to get a lot of posts in them. In a perfect world, a forum webmaster would have very few forums because then it makes the forum appear to be more active. However, there are sometimes so many different topics that it is impossible for that to occur. We need to have different forums and different areas for people to post. Here are some tips when setting it up.

  • Try and keep things relatively simple. Don’t put too many and if you have to, use sub-forums. But, what you want to do is try and consolidate as many posts into one forum so it appears more active.
  • Don’t have a section for technology, movies, games, music, and all of that if your site is about something else. If your site is about, say, science like my site is, you don’t want all those forums. Have one off topic section and the rest is on topic stuff.
  • Put your introduction section at the top and put your announcements at the bottom. What I have found is that by doing this, it consolidates forums more and brings more people in.
  • Only add a new forum when the need comes. I recently just added a medicine section to my forum because I felt the time was right and now I have to worry about updating another section. It can be difficult, there is no denying that.

As you can see…There are a few things to look out for when you are working on your forum. If you have too many forums right from the start, you’re going to appear less active than you really are. A good thing to keep in mind is that each forum should have a minimum of 100 posts in it. If all forums have this, the site will appear more active and that will get more people to join. Forums are all about making the guest feel the site is active. If you can make them think the site is active, they will stick around, sign up, and start posting. And then it becomes a snowball effect. But, you mustn’t start with too many forums or you’ll have a hard time appearing active.
