Theme: Downtime Means Lost Profit

August 16, 2007

One of the greatest problems that a webmaster has is downtime. That term means: “when a site is not up, therefore it is unable to have content added to it and is unable to earn a profit for its owner.” If you decide to use that definition, be sure to give credit to me since I just made that up. ;) Anyways…What that means is that downtime is basically time where your site is not up. People can’t access it, people can’t read what has been added to it, and people are unable to potentially click on ads. For a reader, that sucks because if they like the site, they can’t read it. But for a webmaster, downtime is a worse than anything. It’s time that you don’t make money.

However, there is a way to prevent downtime. Now, you can’t have 100% uptime. That’s pretty much impossible. It’s nice to dream; however, you won’t achieve it because computers are not perfect. However, you can have 99.9% uptime. Just like those antibacterial soaps (which no one should use AT ALL), they only kill 99.9% of germs. Something always can happen. However, if you make sure that you are purchasing the right hosting, you won’t have a problem with downtime. That’s the most important thing right there. Ensure that you are buying the right hosting for your site. Don’t buy too little and make sure it says, “99.9% uptime guaranteed.” If it’s guaranteed, they’ll give you a refund.

Now…Here is one thing that you need to ensure you don’t do when in the market for web hosting. Never go for the cheapest hosting. I know people who will pay $2.00 for what they believe is great hosting and then bam, they lose out. If someone says they will provide you with unlimited hosting, don’t buy from them. Go with a company that says, “you get this much and that’s it.” While it might seem sort of demoralizing that you’re not getting unlimited, you’re getting what you pay for. If you pay a little extra, you’re going to get better hosting because they can AFFORD the server.

One thing web hosting companies are known to do, at least some of the more greedy ones, are oversell. That means, assume they’ve got 1000GB of bandwidth available. They’ll sell 500 to you, 500 to me, 500 to someone else, and 500 to someone else with the mentality that no one will use all 500, so the server can handle it. Now, what happens if you and me BOTH use up all 500GB for the month? If any other person’s site gets even one visitor, all the sites will go down. Why? Because they oversold. They intended on none of their customers to get to that point, but it happens.

If you’re a truck driver, you want the best truck possible. If you run a limo service, you want the best limo possible. If you run a landscaping business, you want the best lawnmowers. Well, we’re webmasters. We should want the best possible hosting. Now, I spend $15.00 a month on hosting because I have so many sites all on one account. However, if you’re looking for web hosting for only ten dollars a month through the same company that I use, you should sign up for Host Gator’s Baby Plan. And, because I am feeling generous, to get the first month for only a penny, insert the word iceishot to get your first month for a penny. Can’t hurt, can it? We’re all about saving money.
