Theme: E-Mail As a Way to Promote

September 10, 2007

Over at 45n5, Mark wrote a really interesting article (and even made a video) about how you really start to get an increase in traffic and awareness just by e-mailing the players in your niche. I really liked what I saw and it brought me to do the same thing today. For some reason, today has been the most productive day for me in terms of promoting this blog and I have to say, it is actually quite fulfilling. But, I wanted to expand on some of the things that Mark said and some of the benefits of doing this. Before I do this, I want to give a quick rundown on what e-mail marketing is and how you can do the same thing.

When you are promoting your site (primarily a blog) using e-mails, what you are trying to do is take your best content and get it around the blogosphere. You are trying to let the big time bloggers know about your blog and, especially, know about your best content. You want them to know about it because if they like what they read, it may give them an idea to write about a blog post and voila, you may get a link back. But, there are some things to keep in mind when doing this and Mark laid those out for us. I’m going to post them here, but to get full details about it, check out Mark’s article.

  1. Promote only your best content.
  2. Don’t tell them to link to you. Just ask them to read the article and if they decide to link to you, awesome.
  3. E-mail them only once or twice (max) a month. Harass them too much and they’ll get fed up.

Like I said, check out Mark’s article for more information on each of those rules. But, there is something else to keep in mind that you can gain from doing this that Mark did not touch on quite so much. By sending them content ideas, what you are doing is marketing. You are getting out there and letting people know that you are serious about what you do. If people see that you are serious, they will take you more seriously. And that will only guarantee that you gain more respect.

But, on top of this, what you are also doing is developing a relationship. If that particular blogger had seen that you wrote a really awesome article, what that may do is bring them to your blog a second time just because. I have gone to blogs because one article was interesting and then started making it a frequent place to go. Well, now you’ve got that big time blogger coming to your blog, checking it out and if they see something they like, they may write about it again. What you are trying to do is get the big time readers to come check out your blog and that allows for you to get them to become potential regulars.

E-mailing the big bloggers is a great way to get content, but there’s one thing that is always difficult. How do you know who to e-mail? Well, you are always welcome to send me an e-mail: jacob[at]dormearning[dot]com (with the changes of @ and .). But, you can also check out Mark’s top 100 money making blogs. Drop them an article if that is your niche. If your niche is something else, I recommend spending some time going around and searching out the top guys in that particular niche and prepare a spreadsheet with their e-mails. It’ll definitely help you out with your potential growth.
