Theme: Four Ways to Get on the Front Page of Digg

December 16, 2007

A lot of people know what Digg is. If you aren’t exactly sure, go ahead and read up on my article about Digg. But, since most people do know what Digg is, I wanted to talk about a few different ways for you to get on the front page of Digg. Now, there is no definite method of getting onto Digg as I will say later on, but for right now, I wanted to touch on a few details just to let you know how you could, if you do the right things, get on Digg. And, before you do that, make sure that your server can handle the assault that Digg will send because the number of people that will come to your site could be incredibly large and that might easily send your server to shut-down land. And, I really don’t think we want that to happen. So, make sure that your server can handle the load before you begin. Here are a few ways to try landing on the front page of digg:

  1. Write a compelling article that is not only unique, but very well written. But, this is half of the battle to getting on the front page by just writing a unique article. The thing to remember is that the title when you submit to Digg needs to be incredibly interesting. If you wrote about a new car, don’t just say: “New Car.” Put something like, “Ford Promises Awesome Return on Their Brand New Car.” You want to make it something that people will look at and go, “really? That’s awesome!” And that will get you more diggs and, naturally, get you onto the front page. This is the most honest of ways because all you’re doing is posting on Digg and hoping for the best.
  2. Naturally, you can ask all of your friends to Digg it for you. Write an interesting article and then develop a list of people that you can ask to Digg it for you whenever you need Diggs. If you have built up an army of Diggers like I have, it should not be all that hard to get a dozen or even two dozen people to head over to your article, click the ‘Digg’ button and voila, you have another Digg. The only downfall is that if members start to follow you and start seeing that you have the exact same people digging your articles, you could start to get buried and that sucks horribly.
  3. Trade them on forums. One of the newest things that is popping up on Webmaster forums is trading Diggs, Stumbles, and numerous other Social Networking ‘votes.’ All you need to do is trade Diggs. Basically, the agreement is that if you Digg one of their submissions, they, in turn, will Digg your submission. This is against Digg rules; however, people do it anyways because they feel that they can get on the front page of Digg and if they get enough front page Diggs, who cares what Digg says? If you get caught, you could get buried or banned and that’ll be that.
  4. The final and most illegal of all methods when it comes to Digg is buying the Diggs. There are people on the web who have created dozens and dozens of different accounts so that they can make money digging for you. One of the things you want to look out for when you are buying Diggs is that the accounts are not “DiggPurchaseAccount1″ and “DiggPurchaseAccount2″ etc, etc. Those are sure signs that you are buying Diggs and bye, bye, you are gone.

People often ask if it is worth using Digg. One of the ways that John Chow got big was he got so many front page Diggs. To get to the top, you need to be known. Digg is a great way; however, it will take more than one Digg to get to the top. If you want to get to the top, my recommendation is to write a bunch of great articles and get them all on the front page. Getting about five or six different front page submissions could really give you that consistent traffic to make you get to the top.

Now, I mentioned that there is no definite way to get to the top. I heard that you need about fifty Diggs to get to the front page, but I have had close to eighty before and still, I was not on the front page. What this means is that there is no real determination of how many Diggs you need. I have heard (although I have no idea if it is true) that the more active you are, the more likely you will get to the front page. And, the same goes for those that vote for you. The more active that they are in the community, the more likely they are going to give you a strong Digg to get you to the front page. Regardless, Digg is a great way to get traffic and it is a great way to really make some money IF you can keep the people coming back for more.
