Theme: Getting a Domain Name and Hosting

April 17, 2007

Before I go into detail on all of the great things that can come from owning a website, the most important thing I feel I can explain is how to get a domain name and how to get web hosting. These are so important because they are what makes running a website very important. I might throw a bunch of offline ideas at you for you to try, but in the end, what I am really hoping to do is educate you on how to get started in this online business thing. A lot of blogs teach you how to become wealthy. I want to teach you how to get started. I want to give you ideas on things that you can do to get yourself somewhere. Anyways…Let me explain what a domain name is what hosting is.

A domain name is your URL, in a sense. For me, my domain name is www.dormearning.com. If you click that, it will take you to the homepage of this blog. A domain name can be nearly anything. Now, I am sure a big question running through your mind is: “Jacob, where do I get a domain name? Is it expensive? Why should I?” My recommendation for getting domain names is www.godaddy.com. They have some great domain services there and they aren’t overly expensive. Try it out and get a domain name. It can’t hurt. However!!! Do not get one until you know what you want to do. What kind of site do you want to make? I will explain types of sites you can make in future posts.

Now that you purchased a domain name, it’s time that we find some webhosting. Now, as a new and upcoming webmaster, you want to find inexpensive hosting, but you want hosting that is GOOD. Don’t go with the theory that cheap is best…Sometimes, it’s better to pay just a little bit more to get quality. I highly recommend HostGator. Hands down, I recommend them. They have amazing hosting and their prices are not that horrific. And, because you’re all faithful readers and I am hoping that you’ll sign up for the hosting through my name (Just follow this link and I make money too), I am going to tell you how to get your first month for a PENNY! That’s right…A PENNY! Try any of these words when they ask you for a coupon: “iceishot” or “jury” or “hgc25″ or “Hostcritique”. Try any of those and it should work.

Once you have purchased your domain name and your hosting, you’ve just accomplished one of the first steps to becoming a webmaster. Now, my big piece of advice is that before you sit down and begin to get a domain name, get a pad of paper and write a little about what you want your site to be about. Want it to be about the new GTA game coming out? Okay! Want to write about dogs and cleaning them? Sounds fine by me. Whatever it is, make sure your domain name has some meaning to it. In future posts, I’ll describe what kinds of sites you can make…So, good luck and stay tuned for future posts to describe what types of sites are good for different people. And hey, there might even be some more offline earning ideas!
