Theme: Getting a Moderator
May 12, 2007What I am going to talk about is something that would interest a forum owner above all. As you may remember from my post about the different types of sites, a forum is an open community where anyone can post. I can tell you from first hand experience, though, that starting a forum by yourself can be very difficult. I have tried and I have some difficult success. Granted, I have made forums that run themselves somewhat. However, if you wish to make a really great forum, help is something that you may quickly come to realize is of the most importance.
Now, the thing you must understand is getting help should only happen when your forum is beginning to get rather large. Before that, if your site is tiny and there aren’t very many members, running it should be a piece of cake. Once it starts to grow and more people start signing up, you’re going to need help. That’s why you hire a moderator. A moderator is someone that is like a manager in a sense. Say you are the President of a company. You hire a manager to make sure all the employees are doing their things. The moderator enforces the rules and ensures that there is activity.
Hiring a moderator does not mean that you need to pay for them. Quite the contrary. You are usually quite able to find someone that is willing to volunteer their time every day because they love the community. If you are in need of help, post in your ‘announcements’ section looking for a moderator. Ask them to send you a private message and ask them to explain why they want to be a moderator and what experience they have. However, sometimes, the best moderators have no experience, but passion for the subject. That is the greatest moderator.
The very great thing about a moderator is that you can suddenly double the activity of your site. It is important to post often as the owner. If you have a moderator posting alongside with you, you will get even more posts and threads up and you can expect to see an increase in activity. Reward your moderator, though. Around the holidays, get him or her a gift. Maybe on their birthday, get them a gift. Rewarding someone is usually enough to really get them working hard once again. Try it out. Hire a moderator if you need one and around the holidays, give them a gift. It will definitely make things wonderful. However, you don’t need to pay them. Like I said, the passion of the subject is usually enough. Good luck!
