Theme: Longer Article or Shorter Article

June 23, 2007

I was talking to my friend online a few days ago and we got to talking about sites and the pages and the such that could be created from having articles on it. Naturally, we were talking about content sites. The thing that she and I talked about considerably was whether an article should be long or if it should be short. The reason we were talking about this is because we were trying to figure out whether, when we made content sites, if we should try to pump out a lot of pages with short articles or if we should try and get better keywords and better ads in long articles. I’ve yet to figure out which is better.

When you write a long article, there’s the chance that you can write the right keywords that better ads will start to appear. Although the article is long, the fact that there are so many keywords in it, you’re likely to get more targeted ads and that can increase your chances of making money. However, the question arises: Are they even going to read the entire article? Will they not get bored and just go somewhere else? Who knows? The long article allows for better keywords, so maybe they’ll go elsewhere by clicking an ad. But, I like knowing my content is read.

With shorter articles, you can get more of them for the same wordage and that allows for more pages. More pages means that if you deep link properly, you can keep the reader on your site longer. So, I wonder…Would it be better to have them on the site longer? The chances of them running into an article they like and an ad they like increases. And, with those increased page impressions, they can also sign up for other ad networks such as Kontera that demands 50,000 page impressions a month. Well, deep linking will send them around your site more.

Which is better do you think? Kontera is a good ad network to sign up with, so having shorter articles allows for more deep linking. But, you may be able to get better ads on a longer ad. Which do you think is better? I am swaying towards shorter articles, but I am not really sure. Perhaps you can change my mind, perhaps you can help me make my mind up. Which is better? A longer article or a shorter article? Leave a comment with your response.
