Theme: Page Rank: What is It

August 14, 2007

I suppose it is a good time for me to finally explain what exactly page rank is, huh? Page Rank is Google’s way of ranking sites. As you can see, at the time of me writing this blog post, the page rank is zero. I have no real rank on the web. But, before I go into that, let me give you a really firm definition of what page rank is from none other than Google:

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important”.

Basically, Page Rank is Google’s way of ranking a website. The way that they determine that rank is by looking at the number of links that go to your site. So, assume that you have fifty sites linking to you. Google will look at that and begin to gauge your worth on the web. However, there is more to it than just how many links. A site could get a higher page rank if it had ten links linking to it with sites having PR5+ linking to it in comparison to a site that has one hundred links to it all from sites with a PR0. The ‘weight’ of a site determines how strong the link value is when linking to you.

Another thing that determines how strong an individual link is to your site is the number of outbound links on the site. What I mean is: say I link to your site. Every link that I have that links to OTHER sites reduces the strength and the weight of the link to your site. The weaker the link, the less it will have an effect on your site’s page rank. This means, when purchasing a link, you want to try and get sites with the fewest possible links. Why? Because then the link to your site will be worth more. Assume it like this…If a site is worth 10 points and it only links to your site. Well, now your site gets a ten point link. But, if that site has ten links, your site is only going to get one point. Which is better?

So, why is it Page Rank so important? According to Google, it is ONE of their ways of determining where you rank in the search engines. I don’t know if that is true, but I’ll believe it simply because that is what Google says and it is their program. The other reason that you want to have a high Page Rank is because people will pay more for links with higher Page Ranks. So, from a profit stand point…The higher your Page Rank, the more possible money you can charge per link. But remember, it’s all a ratio of cost per link. The more links you provide, the less money you can charge. You need to find that balance where you can find the most profitability per link. That’s where the fun is.
