Theme: Types of Sites
April 19, 2007There are loads of websites that webmasters can make. The truth is, if you have an idea for a website, chances are, it can be made. An arcade site? You bet! A blog? You bet! A forum? You bet! There are loads of sites you can make. What this post will explain are the numerous different types of sites that can be made. But, take this information and then expand on it. That’s what differentiates a good webmaster from a great webmaster. If you take an idea and run with it, you are bound to really get somewhere. I am going to describe the types of sites that I run, but please keep in mind that there are many others and I will show you a few. So, let’s get going!
Content Sites: These types of sites are the ones where you see a bunch of articles on them. They can be about anything, but usually what they are are sites that have anywhere from five articles to thousands of articles all with information on the general topic. If I created a site about heart diseases, I’d have article after article of different heart diseases, ways to treat heart diseases and things of that nature. This type of site is the type of site where you hope that people will come to your site from Search Engines (google) and potentially click on ads. The common type of ad found on this site is Adsense.
Entertainment Sites: I call them entertainment sites; others might call them something else. These types of sites are the ones that usually have things of enjoyment on them. An arcade site (click the link to see an example) has loads of games on it for people to play. A myspace resource site (click the link to see an example) has tons of things on it for people that want to make their myspace much better. These sites tend to use other forms of money making on top of just Adsense. You tend to find popups on this type of site.
Blogs: This is a blog. This is a blog. These are all blogs that people tend to update constantly. The difference between a content site and a blog is that for a content site, you don’t need to update it all the time for it to still do alright. You put it up and hope that search engines will start finding you and that’s how you grow. But for a blog, it is best to continue posting on it because of the fact that people openly comment on your posts. Anyone could come to this blog post and write, “Jacob! Awesome post, but I think you should’ve mentioned something about such and such.” Anyone can comment on anything on a blog…That’s not the case for a content site. It’s a community in a sense and that’s why updating it constantly is so important.
Forum: This is what webmasters consider one of the hardest things to get going because of the fact that it requires so much time. An example of a forum is this. A forum allows people to sign up and just post freely. They can post about whatever they want and they don’t need you to start the threads. Why is it so difficult then? Because getting people TO sign up can become extremely time consuming. It can be very difficult to get the forum rolling because people feel slightly intimidated by empty forums. No one wants to join a forum that no one posts on. That’s why it’s important, for you as the Admin, to always post more on the forum. It’s difficult, but it can be very rewarding.
Affiliate Sites: These sites are the ones that rely completely on the help of someone visiting the site. Know those sites where it says, “YOU JUST WON A FREE PS3! Just enter your e-mail here?” Know them? If you do and you entered your e-mail, you made someone money. Others are sites where you need to buy something. So, if I set up a site and it sold baseball bats (and had information about baseball bats), and someone bought it, I’d make a commission. It’s commission based. These types of sites can make a lot of money, but only if people are buying the items from your site. If no one buys, you don’t earn. Or, if no one plugs their e-mail in, you don’t earn.
These are just five types of sites. There are many others and like I said, you are always able to add to it and try to make the site even better than it is. When I go into detail about each site and how to create it and ways to make them grow, I will get better examples and tell you what has worked for me and what hasn’t worked for me. However, check out the links that I provided. I know there are a lot, but they will give you insight on the types of sites that you can find on the internet and information about them. Hey, you never know, maybe in a year, you’ll be making a hundred bucks a day from one of those types of sites. Good luck everyone!
