Theme: Using a Signature to Promote

August 15, 2007

This starts a chain of posts that will find themselves under a similar category: promotion. I decided to start with something very simple, yet extremely effective. There is no denying that forums are a haven for two things: tons of content and tons of readers. Because there is so much content, search engines have a field day, so more people continue to find the site and that just means more potential content. But, how can you use this to your advantage when you don’t even own the site? That really is not all that hard. It’s called a signature and a lot of forums allow you to set one of these up.

What you do is join a forum that is in the same niche as your site, whether it be a blog or another forum. So, for argument’s sake, let’s say that you are running a blog ALL about sports. You love sports and you write about new sports news every single day. That’s great, but you need to get people to read it. So, you come across this MASSIVE sports forum and you decide to join. Now, here’s how it works. You want to put a link to your blog in your signature. But, the key to getting people to start coming to your blog isn’t by spamming their forum with a bunch of useless posts. You need to show them that you are an authority in that field.

When I say that you need to become an authority, you need to prove to these people that you know what you’re talking about. If you post stupid one line posts, no one is going to take you seriously. But if you really show that you’ve got an opinion and that you don’t just say it to sound cool, but to REALLY back it up with some facts, you’re going to start to shine amongst these forum users. By showing people that you are an authority in that particular field, you gain a reputation. And it is that reputation that will get people to look at the signature ad and go, “well, isn’t that interesting.” *click* Oh wow, this blog is awesome, let’s subscribe.

There is one other benefit of having a signature link and that is the second word in that phrase: “signature link.” It’s a link. And we all know that links help to grow your PageRank as well as your search engine ranking. Now, don’t believe that if you have 2000 posts and they all link to your blog, that you’re really going to go anywhere when it comes with page rank; however, it does help a little bit and that is always good. Every little bit helps in my opinion. What you’re primarily looking for when you use forum posting with signatures as a form of promotion is getting people to see that you know what you’re talking about and deserve to be read. Start getting that reputation and it’ll snowball into a nice following.
