Theme: When Should You Monetize Your Blog

September 21, 2007

One of the big questions that people tend to ask themselves is when should they monetize their blog. A lot of bloggers make the common misconception that by putting ads up on their site, they are guaranteed to make a dollar or two a day, if not more. Unfortunately, that is not the case. You aren’t going to make a dollar or two a day right from the starting gate because you won’t have the traffic. That is why I have written a series of posts all on how to promote your site and really get it out there. But, despite that, when should you monetize it? When should you start putting ads onto the site? Follow these next few points almost like a check list and when you’ve reached it, I think it is a good time to start monetizing it.

  • When I have reached two hundred daily unique visitors: I say two hundred because by then, you will be bringing in a nice amount of people and with that comes the possibility for more growth. You may think that two hundred is difficult, but it’s really not. And, the truth is, two hundred is actually pretty low. A better number would be about five hundred and there are some people that even go as high as one thousand.
  • When I know that there is something to give to my members: I write about making money online. While ring tones make an incredible return for affiliate sales, it is not the RIGHT choice for a niche like this. Why? It doesn’t offer anything to them, so it won’t make you an incredible return. If you can offer something worthwhile to them, then put it up. But, don’t just throw up adsense and hope for the best.
  • When your RSS feed has bumped up to one hundred: I am hesitant to say this since RSS feed monetization is so difficult; however, if you think about it, there are some companies, primarily those that buy reviews, that want there to be a minimum readership. One hundred RSS is a pretty nice number and if you have that, companies will start to pay for reviews.
  • When you have them hooked: What do I mean by this? Well, it’s simple…I like to keep people ON my blog. If they like what they read, they may subscribe to the RSS. However, if I put ads on my blog too soon, if one person clicks one ad, they’re gone forever. If you keep them on the blog long enough, they get hooked and that is when them clicking on the ad is not going to make them disappear forever. They will come back.

These are just four small things that I have been bouncing around in my head. Now, I know that I didn’t follow them for a time, but if you realize, adsense is pretty much off my articles. It doesn’t appear and that’s because I am going to start following this procedure. Granted, one hundred RSS subscribers is tough, but that’s primarily for if you want to monetize via reviews. If you just want to monetize with adsense and the such, it’s really quite alright to have a lower number while RSS monetization is so limited. Overall, though, monetizing a blog can make or break a blog.

There are people on the web that cannot stand ads. And while that sucks for us, we can’t let them get in the way of the growth of our sites. So long as your ads are not in their face and not removing from the experience, it’s okay. If you can get people hooked, you have a lot more power over what you can do. If you are a blogger that people love to read, they won’t care if there are twenty different ad companies on your site so long as it does not take away from their experience. Take away from their experience and then you are going to begin to lose the power and the trust that you had gained and that is lost money all and all. Good luck monetizing your blogs and remember that it can take time to make money, but with drive and dedication, you can easily succeed.
